Welcome to my blog the binge eating therapist i am hassan former bingy to turn psychotherapist and today is blog is a request fro a viewer and before i get into it i should probably issue a couple of trigger warnings so firstly there is talk of numbers including how much weight is been gained there is talk of BMI and BMI categories including the word obese not a fan of BMI categories as a determinant of health but i am kind of going to use them for context.
Here to use them for context here if that makes sense so here is the request could you please make a blog about how to handle binge eating overeating for Those Like Me Who Actually Are Obese And Need To Lose Weight Doctor Recommendation But As Soon As I Stop Focusing On Weight Loss I Start Overeating And Hain More Weight Until i have actually become obese BMI is 34.
I know that for most og bunge eaters cutting out weight loss focus is essential but i gained 20 kilos over six months when i didn't pay attention to my weight The First Thing I Want To Say Is That
I Really Relatet To This Question Um When I Was In The Midst Of My Binge eating i was also in the obese BMI category and i can remember looking at other people who were struggling with binge eating who were in much smaller bodies and thinking well it is okay for you to not focus on weight loss because you are in that body.
And if i was in that body i would also be able to let go of weight loss i would be thinking i am in pain my mobility is not great my joints hurt my feet hurt and i was convinces that weight loss would improve my health and the way i felt in my body i also felt that by not keeping, an eye on my weight i was just going to get completely out of control and that seemed to be proved by my experience.
But i want to offer a reframe here to one particular part of this request the viewer says as soon as i stop focusing on my weight i start overeating now that, i think it would be truer to say that as soon as i stop using weight loss as a motivator to stop myself from overeating then i start overeating again to hear the difference the fisrt one it is like well if i am paying attention to my weight that controls my eating.
But it is truer to say that weight loss is being used as a motivator to stop this behavior of overeating and and for whatever reason that is driving the overeating it is not being addressed so there is a question in here that is really important if you relate to this why are you struggling with food why are you using food in the way that you use food if you think that focusing on weight loss is going to change all of that underlying stuff.
You may find that you are mistaken and you efforts to lose weight will backfire weight loss as a motivator is a fickle beast but it is like as long as you are losing weight and you are getting that hit of reward you are probably getting a dopamine hit from that as well anything that is rewarding like the brain produces dopamine and that can be really inspiring it is like great i don't even need to overeat anymore because i am doing so well at mu weight loss and i am feeling really great but what happens when the weight loss.
Stops what happens when it stalls what happens when potentially there is this biological and psychological backlash to this kind of control over your food what we see happening is people end up going back and that is what this person is saying they are saying as soon as i stopped focusing on weight loss.
I Started Overeating And I Gained This Much Weight In This Amount Of Time And When They Say I Need To Lose Weight Doctors Recommendaion My Question To That Would Be Why And chances are i don't know this person is circumstances chances are they would say to me oh for my health okay if its really for your helath are you willing to incorporate health promoting behaviors.
