Many ladies with hypothyroid they struggle to lose weight and they all they struggle to keep it off. And i am here to tell you that it's absolutely possible, it can be simple to do, you can lose weight and keep it off just like everyone else, i will explain how. So if that is you and you do have a weight goal keep on reading, i also have a guide at the end about nutrition and diet and an underactive thyroid particularly with a weight goal and what you should be doing?
So here is the thing your thyroid plays an important role in your metabolic rate the calories or energy that you burn at rest. So it's true if your thyroid is underactive and yiu don't have enough thyroid hormone, which is what it produces you don't have enough of that hormone in your system.
Then your metabolism may be suboptimal. It may not be as fast as someone else who was say identical to tou, but had a healthy functioning, thyroid and because of that it can make weight loss slightly more difficult or slowe and therefore perceived more difficult. And yeah, it's left untreated it can lead to chronic fatigue.
Lot of fatigue thinning hair, really brittle nails, yeah weight gain over time, perhaps faster than someone else who didn't have an underactive thyroid and feeling unusually cold all the time as well. First hormone replacement therapy, so taking a levothyroxine or a synthroid or a desiccated thyroid, if you prefer that is absolutely part of treatment protocol, it's perfectly safe because the reality is your thyroid is not producing the hormone so you need to take it from somewhere else.
There isn't really a way to make it function a hundred percent like it used to when you were younger, it's just it just doesn't happen, so you need to replace it's just like taking a vitamin D supplement you know we can make our own vitamin D from skin exposure to the sun but. You know if you like me and you live in a place where there isn't that much sun you literally just take vitamin D instead and everything functions as normal, and so that's what we are doing with the thyroid hormone.
And so it's safe and the good news is if you are then if you have restored your thyroid levels with the replacement that you are taking then you can lose weight just as efficiently and as easily everyone else with the right system, and the right approach and obviously that looks like you know following the correct balance. Diet and having the right support system in place and accountability being consistently in a calorie deficit as well.
You might be thinking well, what about you know these website were saying i need to have this thyroid extra supplement, it's got selenium, it has zinc these nutrients that are a part of the health of the thyroid. Yes they can help but should be getting adequate nutrition for these minerals from that healthy balanced diet that you are that you are eating. Which is for you weight goal anyway, so you shouldn't necessarily need to take they can help their the but that's like the 1% why would you focus on the thing that gets you one percent of the results versus.
The thing that gets you 99% of the way, you will be banging your head against the wall doing it's like if something wrong, with the engine of your car you go to the mechanic and the mechanic just fixes your tires and he shines your mirrors, well yeah your car is better than before but he just did the one percent that enginee broken, that is 99% and he is not fixed that and that is what people are doing when they are just looking at these minerals and taking these supplements that are supposedly support thyroid health and not looking at the your full diet your stress your lifestyle having a support network direction having someone guide you through the process.
That's the thing that i am trying to get clear to you if you have all these things in place the 99% you will get to your goal, you dont have to worry about the one percent, gluten is a funny one and there's lots of these compounds. So now i am not talking about minerals, i am talking about certain compounds. As well that we could talk about another article.
We know that gluten is directly as gluten intake can influence certain autoimmune issues. For example, celiac disease everyone agrees and that is very clear, now if you have hashimotos. Hypothyroidism then it does appear to be beneficial to reduce your gluten intake in many not all instances but anecdotally so from what we see with clients we that absolutely seems to be the case, it's not that gluten is inherently bad. It could be that gluten containing foods have other compounds in them. And so when you remove gluten you are removing those without realising it.
That's what is helping but gluten doesn't make you store more body fat or something like that. It's more like it might it may indirectly effect how you feel and make you more tired lethragic brain fog wherever and therefore you are more likely to make poor choices when it comes to do i want to go out for that walk today or you know my to my feeling too sick or too tired or too lazy to do that and therefore that affects your ability to lose weight.
